The paper presents the results of information and analytical studies performed when elaborating the draft general pharmacopoeial article «Gas chromatographic determination of the composition of fatty acids in fatty oils» for the 13th Edition of the State Pharmacopoeia of the Russian Federation. Emphasis is placed on the need for a current approach to standardizing fatty oils of botanical origin in the context of their safety. There is evidence that gas chromatographic determination of the composition of fatty acids should be used to define the identity of fatty oils and to estimate the content of impurities of foreign oils in the latter. It is noted that the investigations are aimed at increasing the safety of herbal medicinal products.
