Different iris species have been long used in medicine. Yellow iris (Iris pseudacorus L.) is widespread in Russia. The chemical composition of the plant has been investigated rather intensively. Yellow iris has been ascertained to contain different groups of flavonoids, coumarins, tannins, xanthones, saponins, terpenoids, including iridals, polysaccharides, amino acids, etc. The mineral composition of the plant has been examined. Yellow iris rhizomes are widely used in folk medicine as an expectorant, antimicrobial, diuretic, burn-treating, healing, hemostatic, astringent, and antiparasitic agent. This broad application of the plant is apparently due to its rich chemical composition. Some pharmacological effects (antimicrobial, diuretic, antiparasitic, and antitumor activities) found experimental confirmation. However, yellow iris rhizomes are presented in Russian officinal medicine only as a component of the herbal formulation designed by M.N. Zdrenko (to prepare liquid mixture No. 1). The rich metabolomics of the plant and its long-term use in folk medicine suggest that yellow iris rhizomes are promising plant-made pharmaceutical substances to produce innovative drugs.
