SEA BUCKTHORN (HIPPOHAE RHAMNOIDES) BERRIES: THE MORPHOLOGICAL AND ANATOMICAL SIGNS OF DIFFERENT VARIETIES

introduction. Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) is a valuable medicinal and food plant. Sea buckthorn berry oil is the most known product of processing sea buckthorn berries. The selectionists of the M.A. Lisavenko Research Institute of Horticulture of Siberia have bred a number of varieties and shapes of sea buckthorn, which have advantages over other varieties in yield level, berry size, peduncle length, berry detachment, lack of thorns, resistance to diseases and pests, high oil content, and vitamin levels. The variability of the main signs of fresh sea buckthorn berry varieties has not been previously investigated. Objective: to comparatively investigate the gross and anatomical and diagnostic signs of fresh berries of different sea buckthorn varieties. Material and methods. The object of this investigation was berries of sea buckthorn varieties, such as Trofimovskaya, Studencheskaya, Botanicheskaya Aromatnaya, Krasnokarminovaya, and Nivelena, cultivated in the Botanical Garden of the Faculty of Biology, Moscow State University. Results. Comparison of the macro- and microscopic signs of fresh sea buckthorn berries of different varieties showed that they were anatomically similar. Differences were found in the appearance and numerical characteristics of some diagnostic signs and in their frequency. Conclusion. The findings may be used to compile regulatory documents on berries of sea buckthorn for State Pharmacy the Russian Federation, which takes into consideration its varietal characteristics.
