PHARMACEUTICAL CARE FOR ELDERLY PATIENTS: RELEVANCE, PROBLEMS, WAYS OF SOLUTION

Introduction. Increasing the average life expectancy of the population and maintaining the activity and health of the elderly are an important state task, the solution of which requires that the existing medical and pharmaceutical care system should be optimized. Objective: to study the regulation and current state of pharmaceutical care for the elderly and to develop organizational technologies for its optimization. Material and methods. The study was conducted using system and process approaches, metatheoretical and logical analyses, modeling, and survey. Results. The paper selectively presents the results of a survey among pharmacists, healthcare workers, and elderly citizens on the choice of drugs and on the organization of pharmaceutical counselling. The concept of patient-centered pharmaceutical counselling has been introduced; integrated approaches to the pharmaceutical services ensuring the rational use of drugs in geriatrics have been elaborated. Conclusion. The paper presents the main directions developed in terms of their biomedical and sociopsychological characteristics to improve pharmaceutical care for elderly patients. It provides a rationale for the methodical approaches, that include biomedical, drug-oriented, and communication components, to the formation of the content of educational products for pharmaceutical professionals.
