The paper reviews the current state of birth rates in Arab countries and analyzes of the problems of contraception in Syria where intrauterine devices and oral contraceptives are widely used. The causes of induced abortions and non-use of contraceptives are established. Since the results of contraceptive use have been found to be unsatisfactory, the authors outline developments of new local contraceptive methods and ways to improve family planning services in the public and private sectors and to distribute contraceptives in the rural and poor communities.
