The pharmaceuticals and biotechnology sector is the leader in research intensity (14.2% in 2014) among other sectors of the world economy. This indicator was 5.8% in Russia. Global pharmaceutical companies make major investments in research and development. The paper presents the results of investigating the investment activity of pharmaceutical companies in the research and development of innovative drugs. Therapeutic groups, such as antitumor, antidiabetic, and antirheumatic agents, vaccines, and antiviral drugs, will be in the lead, as estimated by global sales volume in 2020.
