DETERMINATION OF FLAVONOIDS IN CASEWEED (CAPSELLA BURSA-PASTORIS) HERB: PROCEDURE DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION

Introduction. Caseweed (Capsella bursa-pastoris) herb tincture and liquid extract are used as a hemostatic agent. The quality of raw materials is presently determined from the content of extractive substances derived using 70% ethanol, which does not meet the current requirements for medicinal plant raw materials. Objective: To develop and validate a procedure to quantify the amount of flavonoids in caseweed herb. Material and methods. The investigation objects were industrial caseweed herb samples gathered in nature. The quantitative content of flavonoids in caseweed herb was determined spectrophotometrically. Results. A spectrophotometric procedure was developed to quantify the caseweed herb amount of flavonoids calculated with reference to rutin. The procedure was validated using the indicators: accuracy, precision, reproducibility, specificity, and linearity. The total content of flavonoids in various samples of caseweed raw materials amounted to 0.60–1.51%. Conclusion. The authors have proposed a new indicator for the quality of caseweed herb, such as the level of flavonoids calculated with reference to rutin, which is at least 0.5%. The developed procedure and the new quality indicator have been included in the draft pharmacopoeial article for the next edition of the State Pharmacopoeia of the Russian Federation.
