Introduction. Caraway (Carum carvi) fruits are included in the pharmacopoeias of many countries as an antifloaming agent for flatulence and also used as a component in gastric herbal teas. The current documentation governing the quality of the raw material needs to be improved. Objective: to conduct an in-depth pharmacognostic study of caraway fruits to specify and amend regulatory requirements for the raw material. Material and methods. The investigation object was commercial samples of the medicinal plant raw material of caraway fruits. Pharmacognostic analysis of the raw materials, thin-layer chromatography (TLC), and gas-liquid chromatography with mass spectroscopy (GLC-MS) were used. Results. The morphological and anatomical characteristics of crushed caraway fruits were given. Procedures were developed for chromatographic identification (TLC and GLC-MS) of the components of essential oil from caraway fruits. The requirements characterizing the safety of the raw material of caraway fruits were additionally stated. Conclusion. The results of the investigation have enabled the authors to elaborate a draft pharmacopoeia article on caraway fruits, which meets the pharmacopoieal requirements for herbal pharmaceutical substances.
