Introduction. Chamomile (Chamomilla recutita (L.) Rausch) is rich in biologically active compounds and widely used in medicine, in both allopathy and homeopathy. Matrix tinctures prepared from fresh or dried raw plant or animal materials are used to obtain homeopathic medicines. Objective: to investigate the chemical composition of a homeopathic matrix tincture prepared from fresh chamomile herb. Materials and methods. The homeopathic matrix tincture from fresh chamomile herb was prepared according to General Pharmacopoeial Article 42-0027-05 «Homeopathic matrix tinctures». The composition of the matrix tincture was investigated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and high performance liquid chromatography. Results. Fifty-three compounds were identified in the homeopathic matrix tincture of chamomile herb. Carbohydrates of the terpene group were a dominant group in the matrix of substances in the homeopathic matrix tincture of chamomile herb. Vitamins, amino acids, sugars and other compounds were identified. Eight flavonoids were found to be present. Conclusion. The matrix composition of the homeopathic matrix tincture was investigated and marker compounds, azulene derivatives in particular, were found. Their relative percentage ranges from 0.14 to 22.93%. Flavonoid, such as valanginine, nicotifloroside, and astragalin, may be also assigned as marker compounds.
