Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica L.; the family Urticaceae) is one of the known medicinal plants. In the Russian Federation, the raw medicinal plant material of stinging nettle is considered to be leaves having a hemostatic effect. In foreign countries, stinging nettle rhizomes and roots are used to prepare anticancer drugs (Prostaforton and Bazoton). Stinging nettle rhizomes and roots were applied to isolate a sterinic compound identified as ergosterin, as evidenced by UV, 1H-NMR, and mass spectroscopy. A thin-layer chromatographic procedure was proposed for the qualitative detection of stearins in the stinging nettle rhizomes and roots. A spectrophotometric procedure was developed to quantify the sum of sterinic compounds in the stinging nettle rhizomes and roots. The sum of sterins in the in the stinging nettle rhizomes and roots was established to range from 2.07±0.03 to 3.37±0.05%.
