The joint efforts of professional pharmaceutical associations in informational and educational areas create the basis for a strategy to develop hospital pharmacy. The paper considers the aspects of the development of hospital pharmacy in the USA: the trend in the size of hospital pharmacy personnel, the characterization of the types of activity in certain categories of hospital pharmacy specialists, and the consulting of healthcare staff on the issues associated with the use of medicines. In spite of substantial differences in pharmaceutical business in Russia and the USA, Russian specialists can take some practical benefit from the experience of the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists, which have considerably affected the development of hospital pharmacies.
