PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTIVITY OF RAW DRAGON ARUM (ARISAEMA CONSANGUINEUM SCHOTT.) MATERIAL

The pharmacological activity of the rhizomes and herb of dragon arum (Arisaema consanguineum Schott.), a medicinal plant used in folk medicine of Vietnam, was studied. Experiments were carried out on outbred albino male mice and outbred albino male rats, which were kept on standard diets in the vivarium. The investigation was concerned with aqueous tinctures and dry extracts of dried dragon arum rhizomes and herb (the reagent was 40%, 50%, and 70% ethanol). The animal experiments showed the anti-inflammatory, sedative, and antidepressant effects of the tinctures of rhizomes of dragon arum and the solution of dry extracts of its rhizomes (with 70% ethanol) and herb (with 40% ethanol). The solutions of dry rhizome extracts (with 70% ethanol) and herb (with 40% ethanol) were found to have the highest anti-inflammatory effect. The 40% ethanol extract of the rhizomes caused the highest sedative effect in the experimental animals. The sedative activity of the dry extracts of dragon arum rhizomes was comparable with that of valerian extract. The antidepressant effect of dry dragon arum extracts was comparable with that of Deprim. The dry rhizome extract with 40% ethanol, which shows all revealed pharmacological effects, is of the greatest interest for designing a summary extraction preparation of dragon arum rhizomes.
