A NEW SOURCE TO OBTAIN THE ENZYME SUPEROXIDE DISMUTASE

Yeasts and yeastlike fungi produce superoxide dismutase similar to the structure and properties of a respective human enzyme. The presence of this enzyme among 40 strains of the representatives of the genera Saccharomyces, Candida, Hansenula, Torulopsis, Rhodotorula, Sporobolomyces, Debaromyces and Lipomyces was investigated. The investigators isolated the active culture Saccharomyces cerevisiae No. 2 with the high synthesis of the enzyme and simultaneous accumulation of a great deal of biomass. The optimal ratios of carbohydrate to mineral components as part of a nutrient medium and the technological parameters (temperature, aeration) of yeast growth, which increased the accumulation of the enzyme in the yeast cells up to 19.4 IU/mg of protein, were chosen. The selected strain may be used to develop superoxide dismutase manufacturing technology.
